Teen-Led Book Discussion: The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Time of Color-Blindness

Today, the United States has the highest rate of incarceration of any country in the world. With over 2.3 million individuals behind bars, our unwieldy prison system is tearing apart the fabric of our communities and our families, to the detriment of our nation's future.

In anticipation of Dr. Michelle Alexander's visit to Northwestern's Harris Hall Auditorium (Room 107) on February 1st, The Loft hosts a teen discussion of her powerful book, The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Time of Colorblindness.

Join a provocative community conversation about street violence and a proven strategy to halt it as we discuss David Kennedy's Don't Shoot: One Man, A Street Fellowship, and the End of Violence in Inner-city America. Kennedy, who put together the law enforcement recipe which cut gang violence in half in Boston, tells the story of his long journey toward a solution which began with listening to people on the ground, and closing the trust gap between law enforcement and the community. Brian's Favorite Picture Books of 2011 at North Branch

Brian Wilson, Evanston Public Library children's librarian, storyteller, Booklist reviewer, and member of the steering committee for the Blue Stem awards, shares his favorite read aloud books from 2011.

Parents, teachers, day care workers, grandparents and anyone else who loves reading to children will enjoy listening to Brian as he shares his choices. You will come away with the names of books to check out or buy as well as some insight into what makes a picture book a good read aloud.

   

Mango Languages Now at EPL

Mango Languages is an online language learning system that teaches real conversation skills for practical communication in 38 different languages. As you listen to and repeat after native speakers, you'll learn more than just words and phrases. You’ll learn how those pieces can be rearranged and combined to make new thoughts and new conversations.  There are also courses in 15 different languages for those learning English as a Second Language.  Mango is accessible to anyone using a computer within the library, and accessible anywhere if you have an Evanston Public Library card. 

   

New BookScan Scanner at EPL

Need to scan a photo, a document or a page from a book or magazine? The Evanston Public Library’s new BookScan scanner allows you to scan any document or photo, save it onto a flashdrive, send it to a printer (either color or black & white), or email it to a Google document or an email address. The scanner lets you copy, edit or upload ANY document. It’s ideal for making a color copy of a magazine or a reference book article, making it easy to share your favorite articles or photos with family and friends. And if you are looking for a job, you can email a hard copy of your resume to an employer. The scanner and services are free to use (printing is an additional cost).

The BookScan scanner is located on the 3rd floor with the Internet stations near the Magazines desk. If you need help, simply ask a Library staff member. Come check it out during your next visit to the Library!
